Laser Weapon: Starwars becoming reality sooner then we thought.

Lockheed Martin, the company of security and defense technology, showed off the supremacy of its ATHENA (Advanced Test High Energy Asset) laser system by exploding a truck in a field experiment. The firm stated that this laser weapon is the most powerful of its kind ever tested.

[ad id=”1838″]The demonstration showed that 30-kilowatt fiber laser weapon succeeded in bringing down engine of a truck. The reason behind the demonstration of such power was to show the novelty of the company in constructing weapons technology which is more accurate.

Chief technology officer of Lockheed Martin, Keoki Jackson said, “Fiber-optics lasers are revolutionizing direct energy systems,” he further said, “We are investing in every component of the system – from the optics and beam control to the laser itself – to drive size, weight, and power efficiencies.”

The ATHENA is a ground-based model system. The test conducted showed that when the weapon was fired from a distance more than a mile, the laser just took a few seconds to burn through the engine of the truck.

Using the method of spectral beam combining, numerous fiber laser components join together to develop a single high-quality beam which is much more efficient and lethal in place of multiple individual 10-kilowatt laser put to use in other systems.

According to Jackson, the exhibition of the laser weapon is a type of defense technology that the company is very much interested in developing in the future.

Also he said, “This test represents the next step to providing lightweight and rugged laser weapon systems for military, aircraft helicopters, ships and trucks.”

The military is also conducting tests to check the use of the laser weapons for different purposes.
